Bout of Books 22 – Day 4

So I’d like to say that I got a lot of reading done yesterday, Thursday, but I didn’t. In fact I’ve been very busy all day. I did start reading And Then There Were None yesterday morning. I got 30 pages in throughout the day which is not as far as I thought I would get but there’s a good reason for that. Yesterday afternoon I got two new tattoos on my arms which made holding up a book difficult. 9646992

After the tattoo appointment I came home to have dinner and work on my last paper of the semester. I was so exhausted by the work done on my arms that I went to bed early with no additional reading done at the end of the night.

Bout of Books Day 3

Challenge: Show Me Your Precious

This is my copy of Gone with the Wind I got from my mom for Christmas one year. This is one of her favorite books and when I told her I wanted to read it she bought me this copy. As you can see, I have a lot of post-its in this book because I read it as the first book of a book club with some friends of mine. This is a beautiful book filled with personally beautiful memories and I love this so much.

After a little bit of sleeping in I went ahead and finished up the end of The Bingo Palace. I26135825.jpg read 30 pages this morning, just laying in bed and relaxing. I gave the book 4 stars on Goodreads and I am so glad this was my first Louise Erdrich. This book was leant to me by my mother but I own three more of Louise Erdrich’s books and she owns a bookstore in my city that highlights other Native writers. After finishing The Bingo Palace I moved on to my second book of the week, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. I have had this book for YEARS so I am finally reading it. I know it will be a relatively quick read, I read 50 pages already and there are 240 pages total.

Unfortunately, now I need to get some food and get ready for work. Later tonight I may get more reading done.

After work I got home and got back to Fun Home. I finally finished the book a little bit ago and loved it. I gave it three stars because the topic was sadder than expected. I also had other expectations that this just didn’t quite meet up with. However, I look forward to listening to the music from the musical version and a possible reread soon. Now it is time for bed and more reading will come in the morning!

Bout of Books 22 Day 2

Challenge of the Day: Year of You

It’s that time of year, this book is seemingly everywhere around graduation time, and it was published in 1990, just a few months before I was born! Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is a classic now and it’s kind of fun to think that I am the same age!

195326I started off my day by reading  20 pages of The Bingo Palace. Since this is the number of pages I started with yesterday I’m already feeling great! I have about 70 pages left before I’m finished and I think it is completely reasonable to finish it today. That way I’ll be one book down, which always leaves me feeling more accomplished at the beginning of a readathon.

I usually do really well to start reading right away in the morning before I have a chance to get sucked into too much social media stuff or before I get ready for the day. I just lay in bed and read until I need to get up and do stuff. Now I need to take a break because some friends are coming over to my house for a end of the year brunch we have planned. So I want to get some things ready and prep for the pancakes I’m cooking up. I hope I’ll have some time later this afternoon to do more reading. However, I also have some paperwork I need to fill out for my summer internship. I do not want to for get that and that needs to happen sooner rather than later.

I had some time to read before and after brunch with my friends. I’ve read another 20 pages since my last check in. Brunch was a lot of fun though. We had a ton of homemade dishes, fresh baked bread, and of course mimosas. It was nice to relax before we head into summer activities and people start moving in and out of new living spaces. It’s been a gorgeous day outside too, so we have all the windows open in my house and smelling fresh air while I read is wonderful.

Right now I’m looking at some blog posts and waiting for a meeting with my mentor for end of semester work. Once the meeting is done I hope to get back to reading, perhaps some outside sitting as well.

What a day! I have been just go go go since 2:30 this afternoon, so I did not finish my book but I got very close! Earlier this afternoon I read another 20ish pages between meetings and my roommate packing stuff up to move into her new apartment. I read a few more pages right before bed because I needed to finish the chapter but by now I am exhausted.

After reading earlier today, I went with my roommate to get the keys to her new place and help move in a few items. Afterwards we sat on the floor of her new place and christened it with glasses of wine. When we returned home I went straight over to my last D&D campaign session of the year. It ended up taking us 5 hours to finish the game and by then I was ready for bed.

I have 30 pages left of my book which I plan to finish tomorrow and then start something new!

Bout of Books 22 Day 1

As I said, I am working on the end of my semester work for grad school. Today was a busy day and I only got a bit of reading in. The day started with a trip to Spyhouse Coffee in the Twin Cities for coffee with a few of my friends who are traveling to London for a week. They were in town to fly out and we needed a good catch up while I could see

them. After coffee, I went to work for 3 hours. I work for a clothing retailer and had stupidly volunteered to take an extra shift on my day off. However, since it was so short, I didn’t mind so much as I wanted the money. After work I came home and got to doing some online posting for my last class I’m working on. I finished the posting and now I just have a 5 page final paper to write this week. I believe I can do this no problem. At the end of the night I got myself a nice beer and took a relaxing bath. Since I worked 3 long shifts this weekend my legs and feet were killing me. I needed to soak them with some epsom salt and just let my muscles feel happy again.

So reading? I did that too. I did some reading while I waited for my friends before coffeeand some reading last night right before bed. I ended up reading 20 pages of The Bingo Palace. Not much but I’m slowly getting through it.

I’m looking forward to getting a lot more reading done through the rest of the week and plan to do more posts throughout the day. Let me know what you’ve been reading so far this week!

Bout of Books 22 – Sign Up and TBR

Ok friends, that time of year again, BOUT OF BOOKS!

Haven’t posted here in a while but going to blog this week for Bout of Books. I am just finishing up one final paper for the end of my first year of grad school. I hope I will have enough time to do some serious reading and I have a TBR of fun stuff, away from that theology stuff I’ve been busy with for the last 9 months.

I started reading The Bingo Palace a week ago. It was leant to me by my mother and I’m about halfway through so far. I hope to finish soon so I can move on. There are a few thriller/mystery books because I was feeling that urge and they are quick reads. I also have a YA book and two graphic novels. My goal this week is to read some fun quick reads before I dive into a longer book for the summer.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 14th and runs through Sunday, May 20th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 22 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team”

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon – Mid Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now? Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
2. How many books have you read so far? I’ve finished 3 books, two of which I started today.
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I plan to read Sex Criminals and Sharp Objects for the rest of the readathon.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Not really, besides cooking.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I’M ALREADY SLEEPY. Also I’m way more into reading this year than blogging, which I guess is fine.

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon – Opening Meme and TBR

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Same as last time, my home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? I’m pretty excited about all of them, I picked out some spooky reads. Maybe the Shirley Jacksons.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Forget snacks, I’m making Pumpkin Chili for dinner and I am PUMPED!
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I usually am pretty good at prepping and cleaning before this readathon and this week I just dropped the ball! I might need to listen to my audiobook and clean or I’m going to go crazy.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I woke up later than I usually do, writing this in hour 3, but I hope that means I can stay up later.

Bout of Books 17 – Days 2 & 3

Ok, so I didn’t post yesterday, WHOOPS! We’ll get to the excuses in a minute but first, lets talk Day 2.

12331767On day 2 I read a little bit of High Rise during my lunch break. The pages are really big on my Nook copy so it was only 3 or 4 pages in my 15 minutes of reading but it felt like so much more.

After work I read The Fireman pretty much all evening between episodes of Angel, because I am scum. I read 50 pages on Tuesday night before I passed out.

Yesterday, I read some more High Rise during lunch. I was able to read more than on day 2 but I still have quite a ways to go before I’m really in it..

25816688After work I went shopping with a friend of mine. We were shopping for her outfit for her Bachelorette Party this weekend. I got back home late and by the time I ate dinner I was exhausted and ready for bed. I didn’t have it in me to post that mediocre reading last night. However I did tell myself I had to read before bed. I read 14 pages of The Fireman before passing out again.

So far I’ve read 19 pages of High Rise and 64 pages of The Fireman. I plan to read a lot more tonight and I got a fun book in the mail earlier this week that I might sneak into my TBR.

Bout of Books 17 – Day 1

25816688 1 I worked, all day. And then after work I went to see my old high school’s marching band preview show. So I didn’t get much reading done but I did read 28 pages of The Fireman. So not a terrible day. Plus still 6 more days of reading!

I hope your day 1 was great as well, hopefully everyone else read more than I did. Let me know what you’re reading in the comments!

Bout of Books 17 – Sign Up and TBR

I can’t believe it’s already time for the next Bout of Books! This is my sign up and I will go over my TBR for the week, as you can see above.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 22nd and runs through Sunday, August 28th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 17 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

This week I intend to focus on the books I’m currently reading and add it some fun graphic novel reading. I started The Fireman a couple weeks ago and I’m only about 30% through so far. I’m loving it so far so I expect to get a lot of that read this week. Similarly I have started High Rise this weekend. This I need to finish for book club either this week or next week. I’m not very far in this so this will be a lot of my reading this week as well.

I picked up Saga Vol 6 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8 Volume 1 a couple weeks ago and they seem like the perfect reads between my mandatory novels. I do have other books I can pick up IF I finish the books on this pile but I have a feeling this stack will keep me occupied. I will update daily and I look forward to see how everyone else does this week!
